Surfrider Foundation Europe (a 1% for the Planet nonprofit member) is committed to protecting the oceans through political participation and scientific expertise. To launch their Riverine Input project, a project designed to monitor waste in rivers, they partnered with 1% for the Planet business member, Gobilab. The funding provided by Gobilab covered the purchase of equipment for macro-waste monitoring, travel costs for monitoring by kayak and the presentation of the project.
From Source to Sea
In the first quarter of 20202, the team was able to come up with a waste tracking application and monitoring site with the support of Microsoft teams, and are set to release the app and website during summer 2020. The team hopes that in training volunteers in using the app, it can go on to be used across Europe. To track the route of waste from source to sea, the project has started with the Adour River in France.
