Mermaid Straw hosts beach cleanups on Lake Michigan every month from April through September. They use these cleanups as an opportunity to bring together local residents and businesses to spread awareness among our community about the impact that plastic pollution has on our environment.
Their business cleanup partners provide participants with freebies to show appreciation for their efforts AND even have professional Mermaids swim ashore for each event!
In 2019 Mermaid Straw held 8 beach cleanups, where more than 1500 volunteers showed up! Over the course of the cleanup season, these events removed over 3,800 pounds of trash from the shores of Lake Michigan!
